What Denim Jeans to Wear For Your Body Shape

What Denim Jeans to Wear For Your Body Shape
By Dearne Sutherland

I find that American jean brands are best as they seem to offer the most variety and there is something for everyone - look out for Hudson jeans, Citizens of Humanity, Earnest Sewn, Current/Elliot and J Brand. For fashion forward denim brands, Scandinavian brands such as Acne and Nudie jeans are great as are Australian labels Sass & Bide and Ksubi.

If you are shopping on the high street, you probably won't get the same quality in cut and finish but you can still find a great essential pair at stores such as Gap, Topshop, French Connection and River Island.

If you find a pair that fit you, it's best to buy up! Buy them in a number of different colours - dark blue, a medium blue for Summer and black are most flattering. Steer clear of light colours such as light blue or grey as these will add pounds to your legs and also show off a multitude of sins and bumps.

Here are my tips to look out for when finding the perfect pair of jeans for your body shape;

Pear shape
- Subtle boot leg cut
- Mid rise, dark denim
- Curved waistband (no gaping at the bum)
- Long length
- No big pockets (make bum look even bigger)
- No pale coloured jeans as they draw attention to bottom half

Hourglass
- Unlike trousers, the best solution for different hip & waist size is to wear lower cut jeans that sit on the hips
- Ideally the cut will sit just under your belly button and be a wide curved waistband
- Curvy girls should go for classic straight leg jeans as opposed to wide jeans
- Always stick to dark blue
- Boot-leg and Flared jeans are only flattering on tall women

Apple shape
- Look for a mid-width, mid-rise style
- Dark wash
- High set back pockets
- Straight shape
- No low slung, or baggy shapes

Petite
- Don't wear boot-cut as they will make you look shorter
- Wear a dark blue pair of straight cut jeans
- Focus on a cut that fits the waist, hip and bottom
- Don't wear a belt to create a elongating effect

Slim
- Low waisted, straight leg boy-cut jeans are flattering
- Choose a thicker denim over a thin
- Pockets on the butt will give you volume and help to make your bum not look so flat
- Keep the length to your ankle bone or tuck them into boots
- High waisted jeans will work well on you as they emphasis the hips and bum
- Wear a belt to emphasis your narrow hips
- Avoid skinny leg jeans as they will make you look even skinnier

Big butt
- No boot-cut as it shortens your frame
- Straight cut or mid-width are best
- No big pockets
- No low-slung
- High waist, curved waistband
