Denim As a Fashion Survivor
By Elle Jones
What does it take to be called timeless? Today, we speak about icons like Audrey Hepburn and Princess Diana and as timeless. To be called timeless, is to have evolved over the years, maintained a quality of distinctiveness, and left a lasting legacy. In that sense of the word, denim can be called a timeless fabric. With an interesting history behind its conception, it is believed that denim has been around since the 17th century. Yet unlike other fabrics, and styles, it did not simply die a natural death in modern times. It became something much larger than itself with a global audience so huge that it can be spotted on a teenager in Johannesburg and worn stylishly by a model on the ramp. That's where the beauty of denim lies. There's something for everyone.
Of course, the popularity of denim has been amply notched up by celebrities as well. Beginning with the 70's, denim became the in thing to be seen in. Not before long, hippies were wearing it, movie stars were shown wearing denim on screen, rock stars were wooing fans in patched up jeans, and celebrities became famous for certain denim styles. A whole generation of teenagers began to wear denim because of its rebellious and in your face image. Not much has changed even now. Then of course, denim manufacturers began the denim war, by adding small features or styles to differentiate their brands from the rest. Thus was born the trend of copper buttons, a multitude of washes, shades and styles. Eventually people became brand conscious and were often loyal to one or two denim brands. Fashion designers picked up on the trend, adding denim to their collections and proudly featuring it on the runaway. From starting out as an easily available and cheap fabric, denim slowly moved up the ladder in style, on its way to becoming a fashion item.
In order to change the perception of rebellion and teenagers associated with it, heavy experimentation began. Lycra was added to give a better look and fit, whereas bigger pockets, embroidery, rolled up hems and visible stitches were used to glam up the blue fabric. For a time, manufacturers actually tried to sell denim in colours other than blue, but only shades of white and black besides other variations of blue successfully survived. Denim was no longer just a trouser- shirts, skirts, dresses, capris, overalls, jackets, bags and even shoes were slowly added to the clothing range. Today it is not unusual to find more than two pairs of denim wear in a person's wardrobe but what makes the fabric itself so interesting is that there are hundreds of styles one can adopt and a number of ways to wear it. That must be the reason why we all watch in awe as Kate Moss wears her jeans looking uber cool, and we nod in admiration as Brad Pitt wears a white shirt tucked into his blue jeans. Denim makes looking good so effortless, and therein lies its uniqueness. Everybody is a style icon by themselves, simply by wearing it.
