Aramis was launched in September 1964 in New York and then in the UK exclusively in Harrods at first. It has remained popular ever since and has taken the owning company, Estee Lauder Companies, to the heights of fame in the eyes of the large public. As a manufacturer of classy skin care products, Estee Lauder was already renowned in the ladies market. Since then the Aramis fragrance has grown and now includes a wide variaty of shaving and grooming products.
In a short sentence, Aramis could be described as the fragrance that separates the men from the boys. It's definitely a male product and nowhere near the uncertain sex perfumes like some CK or D&G.
Aramis has an interesting composition. The top note is Bergamot Oil, the middle notes are a Clary Sage, Myrtl Oil and Clove Bud Oil, all resting on a base made of Patchouli, Sandalwood, Vetiver and Tree Moss. So it's a bit of Oriental, a bit of Caribbean and a bit of Old World, all merged into a true classic scent. The result tends to go sweet and spicy, just like Old Spice, but not overly sweet and certainly not intoxicating. Considering its beginning has been over the top, I think it's just fair it is considered as one of the most impressive fragrances of the vintage era.
Once you splash it, longevity is something you will definitely remember. It sticks with you for better and for worse, rainy or hot. That's why I advise against splashing liberally, it will probably be a bit too much for those around you. A good perfume, any perfume for that matter, should make an impression based on a subtle whiff and not by intoxicating everybody you share an elevator with.
So basically, Aramis is in the same league with Brut, Old Spice or Dana's English Leather. Old time classic, once a fan, always a fan. And one cannot neglect the fact that women were the ones who actually voted this as one of the best 10 male fragrances. Ever!
As a side note, about the origins of the name, Aramis was one of the three musketeers that made Alexandre Dumas famous as a writer. Actually, Aramis was the ladies' man, the well groomed elegant soldier that fought his battles equally on the battlefield and in the alcove.
