Giorgio Armani - The Man Behind Armani

Giorgio Armani - The Man Behind Armani
By Pollux Parker

Born on July 11, 1934 in Piacenza, Italy, is one the most famous fashion designers in the world and is considered as the most successful Italian designer - Giorgio Armani.

Armani started his career in fashion industry when he worked for Nino Cerruti, an Italian stylist and fashion designer, from 1961 to 1970 as an assistant designer. His work included designing the menswear "Hitman" and after nine years, he resigned from his job with Cerruti to do freelance work. In 1974, Armani created his own company Armani, together with Sergio Galeotti, a fashion house that created menswear clothing. In 1975, Armani began creating his successful line for women.

Armani achieved his break as an international fashion designer by designer for several Hollywood celebrities especially for Richard Gere when he starred in the movie "American Gigolo" during the 1980. Aside from being a world-class designer, Armani is also known as an innovator. In fact, he was the first designer who initiated to ban fashion models with 18 or lower Body Mass Index (BMI). Armani made this bold step after a Brazilian model named Ana Carolina Reston died from anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder where one refused to keep a healthy body weight due to obsessive fear that gaining weight would distort one's self image. Reston was believed to suffer from such disease after she was told that she's "too fat" during one of her casting calls.

In 2001, Forbes magazine listed Armani as the most successful Italian designer with an estimated net worth of $1.7 billion. Five years later, in 2006, Armani received the same recognition when Forbes estimated his net worth at $4.1 billion.
